The book is about 1,300 years old and written in Coptic, the Egyptian language. It is composed of pages of bound paper—a type of book that researchers call a codex.

“It is a complete 20-page paper codex, containing a traditional healer’s handbook,” write Malcolm Choate of Macquarie University and Ian Gardner of the University of Sydney in their book, “The Coptic Handbook of Ritual Power” (Brepouls, 2014).

They said the book “contains many medicines or mantras for spirit possession and cure of various diseases or for success in love and business.” For example, to control someone, the codex says you must say a magic formula with two nails, and then “insert them into the door, one on the right (and) one on the left.”

Researchers believe the codex may date back to the 7th or 8th century. During this time, many Egyptians were Christians, and the codex contains many prayers that refer to Jesus.

However, some prayers seem to be more closely related to the group known as “Sethians”. This group flourished in Egypt in the early centuries of Christianity and was Seth who was the third son of Adam and Eve. One of the prayers in the newly interpreted codex calls him “Seth, Seth, the living Messiah.” [The Holy Land: 7 Amazing Archaeological Discoveries]

Researchers said the opening of the codex refers to a divine figure named “Baktiothha” whose identity is a mystery. The verses read, “I thank you and invoke you, Baktyotha: the great, the most trustworthy; the master of the forty-nine kinds of snakes,” according to the translation.

The identity of the person using this codex is anonymous, as is its origin. The style of writing suggests that the book originated in Upper Egypt. It is now housed in the Museum of Ancient Civilizations at Macquarie University in Sydney. One of the items in our retrospective exhibit Hebrew Manuscripts: A Journey to the Written Word is a small codex from sixteenth-century Italy. It is entitled The Tree of Knowledge (Ets Ha-Dat) and contains 125 magical letters collected for all kinds of purposes: curses, healing potions, love charms, amulets. There are a good number of such medical magical manuscripts in Hebrew collections, but this volume is unique for at least two reasons. First, because of its neat design and the accuracy of its implementation. Second, because it contains an introduction where Elisha, the author, tells how he collected these mantras.

According to his introduction, Elisha had a great thirst for knowledge, and he embarked on a journey to satisfy it. He wanders from city to city until he reaches Venice, a great city full of wisdom and wisdom. There, by God’s mercy, he won the trust of Rabbi Judah Alkabets, and entered the rabbinical library. He immediately realized that God’s collection contained an inestimable number of Kabalistic “which have come forth for name and glory, and all are written in God’s handwriting – Ex. 31:18] So he swore in his heart that he would not leave God. The library until Until he gathered all the secrets. As he wandered through the books, he saw “a hidden book that was sealed, in a chest, and covered with a cloth.” When he opened this hidden book, he found various spells, and he made a decision. After the death of Judah Alcabetz, Elisha left Venice and continued his journey, and he finally reached White in the land of Israel. He spent a long time there before he gained confidence in White’s wisdom, but in the end he shared his hidden wisdom. His book, which he called The Tree of Knowledge, is based on the mysteries found in Venice and Salvation.

So what kind of knowledge did Elisha bin Gad get in Venice and White? Let’s look at a few letters from each section. Oh, it’s so hard to choose!

It is easy to find the famous magic word “abracadabra” in this magic. It first appears in a second-century Latin medical poem by the physician Quintus Serenus Semonicus. The origin of this word is unclear. It may come from the Aramaic awrah ke-dawrah, meaning “I make as I speak”, but there are many other theories surrounding it.

Another category includes spells that use Satan’s name to “conjure up the spirit of impurity and vice versa,” as Elisha put it. To be honest, I don’t always find such names attractive in this category, although on the other hand it may be due to my limited knowledge and experience. However, the section contains many useful mantras – 19 in total -, and others that make you invisible, help you find snakes and snakes, make you “snake-proof” or “sword-proof”, and help you catch thieves. For a little something. Here is the next example (No. 80):

While I do not recognize these magical words at all – could some of them be names of evil spirits? – I had a good luck spell number. 97 Burning fire:

“Agrifuk agrifar agripyri, who did you want to injure with fire?”
