“Don’t you see? Every step I took, starting with that girl on the bridge, was going to bring me closer to you.” More than 20 years ago, psychologist Arthur Aron made two strangers fall in love in his laboratory.
I will say. Earlier in the evening, the man said: “I suspect you can fall in love with someone given the characteristics you have in common. And if so, how do you choose someone?”
He was known from university, who every now and then I would run into on the way up to the gym and think, “What if?” Check out her day on Instagram. But it was done a long time ago.
“Actually, psychologists have tried to make people fall in love,” I said, recalling the research of Dr. Aaron “It’s exciting. I’ve always wanted to try it.’
I first read about the study when I was in full swing. Every time I thought about leaving, my heart beat my brain. I felt stuck. So, like a good academic, I turned to science, hoping it was a path to a purer love.
I was explaining the research to my university friend. A heterosexual man and a woman enter the factory through different doors. They sit face to face and answer a series of increasingly personal questions. Then they look into each other’s eyes in silence for four minutes. In the most exciting detail: six months later, two participants got married. They invited the whole factory to the ceremony.
I admit that our experience no longer equates to research. First we were in a bar, not a lab. Second, we were not strangers. Not only that, but now I see no one offering or agreeing to an experiment that aims to create romantic love unless they are ready for it.
I googled the questions Dr. Aron; 36. For the next two hours we passed the iPhone across my desk, each taking turns asking questions.
They began innocently: “Do you want to be famous? How?” And “When was the last time you sang to yourself? Anyone?”
Responding to the prompt, “You and your partner seem to have three names in common,” he looked at me and said, “I think we’re both interested in each other.”
I laughed and sipped my beer while listing a couple more communities that I just forgot. We exchanged stories about the last time we each cried and confessed that we wanted to ask one thing about the boy. We explained our relationship with our mother.
These questions reminded me of the infamous boiling frog experiment, in which the frog didn’t realize the water was getting hotter until it was too late. In our case, due to the gradually increased level of vulnerability, we did not notice that the intimate borders had entered until we were already there, which can usually take a process of weeks or months.
I enjoyed learning about myself through my answers, but I enjoyed learning about him even more. The bar, which was empty when we arrived, was full by the time we stopped for a bathroom break.
I sat alone at our table, aware of my surroundings for the first hour, and wondered if anyone had heard our conversation. If there was, I wouldn’t have noticed. Nor did I notice how the crowd thinned out and the night wore on.
We all have a narrative about ourselves that we present to strangers and acquaintances alike, but Dr. Aron cannot rely on that narrative in any way. Our familiarity was as mature as I remembered from summer camp, staying up all night with a new friend, sharing the details of our short lives. At 13, from home for the first time, it is only natural to get to know someone quickly. But adult life rarely presents us with such circumstances.
The most uncomfortable moments were not when I confessed about myself, but when I felt about my partner. For example: “Take turns sharing what you think is positive with your own partner, a total of five items” (Question 22) and “Tell your partner what you want about him; this time be very honest, because you will not tell anyone that you are dating (q. 28) .
Much of the research of Dr. Aron focuses on building interpersonal relationships. In particular, many examine the ways in which we embody the well-being of others. It is easy to see how questions are encouraged by what they call “extension”. Sayings like, “Like your voice, your taste in beer, so all your friends seem like you,” makes certain positive qualities that are clearly valuable to one person to another.
It’s really amazing to hear that someone is wondering about you. I don’t know why we don’t love each other all the time.
We finished at midnight, which took us much longer than the 90 minutes of the original search. Around the bar, I felt as if I had been awakened. “Not bad,” I said. “It’s certainly less awkward than looking into someone else’s eyes.”
The night was hot and I could not sleep. They reached the top, then turned to each other. I fumbled for my phone as I set the timer.
